Home sales report revives U.S. stocks

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Wednesday shaved opening losses to veer in mixed terrain after the government reported sales of new homes rose for a fourth month in a row in July, with the data better than expected. Consumer discretionary shares climbed in the wake of the data. Off nearly 50 points ahead of the report, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately up 3.55 points at 9,542.84. The S&P 500 Index rose fractionally to 1,028.31, while the Nasdaq Composite added 4.1 points to 2,028.33.
